I so wish more people knew the background of this wonderful Carol especially pastors/ministers who like to chop out verses to sing just the first two or first and last. You don’t get the message of this hymn unless you sing all of it.
What a beautiful story and an important piece of history. Thank you! What a beautiful Christmas present you have given me. This has always moved me deeply and now I know why!
Merry Christmas eve to you as well. :) Years ago when I wrote a story based in history, yes I actually published a short story online and have a huge collection of unpublished short stories some fiction, some based on history I submitted it w/ references. I think the editors are no longer in business. LOL but they actually denied the publication because I included the historical references. LOL.. AWESOME CHRISTMAS story POST: I hope you have bless Christmas morn with your beloved family and friends. :) Isabell.
I think the rendition by Casting Crowns is very powerful and does a good job of emphasizing the message of the song. It may not include the references to the Civil War, but it still does an amazing job.
Thank you so much for posting the back story of this poignant, painful, but hopeful song! Here is a rendition that captures the somberness, beauty, and hope... God is not dead! https://youtu.be/kCos4OeiJrU?si=IUZv1f0YkTlgWKWS
What a day today was for poignant messages. I started off early this morning with a John Kass piece, "O Holy Night" and I am ending my day with your elucidation on this touching and heartfelt Carol. Thank you for this and all that you do!
This is like icing on the cake of another long and wonderful Christmas Day🎄 I’m just now able to sit down and read it and the story is such a blessing. I never knew who wrote the Carol but only knew I loved it. Now I know why. Thank you, T❤️🎄
One of my fellow church members requests this song at least once a year. I play guitar and sing hymns and Christian songs in church, so when the brother recovered from being ill it was time to sing it, appropriate seeing how at the time of writing Henry was taking care of an ill son.
