Why the Sussmann Indictment Matters
And other potential charges
It would have been easy for Special Counsel John Durham to let Michael Sussmann off the hook.
After all, Sussman is a former federal prosecutor with the DOJ who has deep connections in the press and the Democratic Party. He what we call a “favored” DOJ alum who has access to the top of the FBI and DOJ.
Then consider how much time has passed. It has been nearly five years since Sussmann, at the time a Perkins Coie partner working on behalf of an unknown tech client (Tech Executive) and the Hillary Clinton Presidential Campaign, met with FBI General Counsel James Baker and relayed to Baker the false allegations that the Trump Organization was in secret communications with a Russian bank (Alfa Bank).
This is not the type of person typically indicted by the Department of Justice. Yet here we are. The indictment might have been a long time coming, but there is no doubt it took some degree of courage. We hope that is is a sign of courage still to come.
