District of Columbia federal judge Tanya Chutkan, seemingly unsatisfied with violating Donald Trump’s right to effective assistance of counsel by setting his complex case for trial in March 2024, has taken things further.
She has now restricted Trump’s ability to speak, stripping his First Amendment rights, during his Presidential campaign.
Today, Judge Chutkan conducted a hearing in which she considered Special Counsel Jack Smith’s proposed gag order, which sought (in general terms) to prevent Trump from criticizing the Court, the prosecution, and the witnesses in the case - one of whom is running a struggling campaign for the Republican nomination against Trump. As Trump’s attorneys put it during briefing on this issue, the Special Counsel’s gag order was “nothing more than an obvious attempt by the Biden Administration to unlawfully silence its most prominent political opponent.”
