Grandpa's gun was very common 50 years ago. Custom stock and fancy scope, check. I have one from back then that my Dad customized. He has another two. Don't expect in depth knowledge from any journalist. Expect it from qualified experts. Dad is a gunsmith btw. And that shot was cake for even a marginal marksman. That roof should have been covered. One guy with just binoculars even and Charlie is still alive.

By the way, what do you think of this? A friend of mine was saying it doesn’t make any sense that he would leave fingerprints on the gun. But what I say is, how do we know that that was the gun actually used? We can say it came from the FBI, but it still needs to make sense. The text messages address the fingerprint issue, giving him a reason for having left them as he had not intended to leave the rifle behind because he had to change clothes. So he didn’t wear gloves because he was planning to take the rifle with him. That sounds like poor planning - well actually that kind of fits somebody who’s really young.

I wanted to be a science writer and in many ways I was. I’ve covered plane crashes, energy, water, business, crime, education and politics. Most of the time I was the only reporter in the newsroom who could calculate a percentage (!). I minored in economics. I’m a student of human nature and of history. I think everyone can evaluate an analysis on its own merit rather than just considering the source which is assumed to be a certain way.
